Mind the App: Walking in London just got better

A local business has been working hard to make London more accessible so that everyone can enjoy the upcoming Olympics and discover what London has to offer.

Alick Mackenzie, the founder of Enabled City has been working with people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities for over ten years and is passionate about helping London grow towards being more inclusive to the needs of these people.

“We’re really excited to introduce our newest innovation, PhotoRoute. In my years working with people with disabilities, I gained insight into the qualities that they value in products and in everyday life and began to realise that improved access, amenities and attitude are things we could all benefit from. Products and software don’t need to be exclusive or specific, but should include all of these things for everyone to enjoy.

With my experience in mind and working closely with focus groups, we developed PhotoRoute into an exciting, one of a kind, digital mapping software. PhotoRoute offers an alternative to traditional and linear maps and we use layers of information to make map reading and wayfinding easier and bring the fun back into navigating. Our photo-based routes and tours use simple instructions and directions along with gps technology and maps to guide you along walking routes from start to finish and take the stress out of navigating quirky London streets.”

“Recently we have been given the honour of working closely with the Greater London Authority to produce walking maps of the newly-renovated South Bank area and of the Discovery Trails of London that have been commissioned for the Olympics. These exciting opportunities gave us the chance to expand our route database (to over 100 maps!) and the confidence to launch our new app, PhotoRoute London, for android and iphone. We produced a total of 6 discovery trails around London and 26 routes around the South Bank area which we hope will guide some of the 22 million tourists that London receives every year, especially in the run up to the Olympics!”

“All of our routes are designed to be step-free and provide essential route information and our mobile app uses GPS location to show you exactly where you are on the map and our iphone app is available offline to avoid those nasty data roaming charges. We aim to make following our routes as easy as possible by beginning and ending routes at main Transport for London stations and we try and ensure that our longer routes have shortening options in case you or the kids get tired.”

“PhotoRoute and our PhotoRoute London app are the ideal solution for families, those speaking English as a second language, people with disabilities and tourists as our aim is to make walking through London as easy and accessible as possible for everyone to enjoy.”

“The PhotoRoute London app gives users access to our entire map database and route information including estimated distances and times and gps location services.  Users can now download routes and take virtual tours before leaving the house to ensure that the route is accessible to them and prepare before leaving the house. “
