In terms of pronunciation, the name has changed little in 800 years. It was recorded as Ealdestrate c.1200 and le Oldestrete in 1373. It is believed that its history extends much further back than this though and is thought to be part of an old Roman road connecting Silchester and Colchester- by-passing the City of London. Some domestic buildings from the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, though somewhat battered and altered in function, still stand on Old Street. At the east end is the recently renovated Shoreditch Town Hall. The eastern half of the road is on the London Inner Ring Road and as such forms part of the boundary of the London congestion charge zone. Old Street and the surrounding areas of Hoxton, Shoreditch, Spitalfields, the City, Clerkenwell and Islington also host a thriving night life and art scene. Old Street station is located under Old Street roundabout at the junction with City Road. Within the past few years Old Street has become a favoured location for notable graffiti artists such as Banksy and Jef Aérosol. Banksy especially has featured several pieces on “Shoreditch Bridge”. The area has attracted a great number of IT companies, both new and established, and has been dubbed ‘Silicon Roundabout’.
Living in Old Street London
This area has become a popular place to live due to the excellent transport facilities and its close proximity to several, highly desirable, areas. Particularly popular with those that work in the City, it represents a location where many residents can easily walk to work and, in the evening and weekends, can also walk to bars, restaurants, galleries, fashion stores, parks, canals and much more. Old Street runs from the heart of Clerkenwell out to Shoreditch High Street, forming a main junction at City Road. Adjacent Streets offer access to a broad range of accommodation, retail and entertainment. The area is well served by Old Street station which is on the Northern Line and is also an ‘overground train’ station for the National Rail Network. There is also a broad range of bus routes that merge here offering ready access to extensive sections of London. With ‘Boris Bikes‘ readily available as well as the nearby proximity of Liverpool Street, Shoreditch High Street, Barbican and Moorgate tube and train stations it is easy to see why Old Street is such a popular and convenient location.
Old Street Property
Like many parts of London, the area offers a wide range of London residential flats, Old Street apartments and other types of property both for sale and to rent. Old Street accommodation ranges from Ex-Local Authority housing to purpose built london student accommodation to the uber-luxurious Bezier Apartments over-looking Old Street roundabout. There are a range of new build developments, period properties, lofts and more which range from small studio apartments or suites to luxurious penthouse apartments with gyms and concierge services. The broad range of property caters to a wide range of budgets and we find that we regularly deal with ever type of tenant – from students and those on Income Support to high-end professionals with specific requirements and a budget to match. Competition for accommodation in the area is fierce and it is therefore essential that parties are decisive when looking to rent or buy a property. This high demand, and the continual growth in desirability in the surrounding areas, has resulted in excellent growth in terms of rental income and capital value for Old Street landlords and home-owners alike.
